Dial-up to High-speed!

What do I think of when I here the word “Internet”?

Well, I think of 1997, which was when my family and I hooked it up in our house. My family for whatever reason did not get it when it was first available to the public. It was so exciting! A whole new advancement of technology and realm of information available at my fingertips. Unfortunately, we had dial-up – the slowest connection possible. I loved the Internet and hated it at the same time because of the speed. On occasion, it would take quite some time to find what I was looking for and it seemed that whenever I reached “the final destination”, that one member of my family picked up the phone and as a result, I lost my connection along with the item I was searching for.

On a positive note: I was able to find information that I needed for school projects online instead of having to go the library which was only open at certain hours of the day. This made both my life and my parents life a lot easier because I no longer had to ask for a ride/ get driven to the library.

Now, more than 10 years after it was introduced, I don’t have to worry about getting disconnected by another person picking up the phone because dial up is a thing of the past and I, like so many other people have what is now referred to as “high-speed Internet”. It is still hard for me to comprehend that a technological advancement such the Internet can have a profound effect of my everyday life.
